Breathe Easier This Fall: Acupuncture for Strong Immunity

Autumn + Acupuncture: Supporting Your Lungs and Immunity

As the air turns crisp and the days grow shorter, autumn signals a season of change. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this is more than just a shift in weather—it’s a time when our bodies naturally align with the rhythm of the season.

Autumn is associated with the Lung and Large Intestine systems, which play a vital role in immunity, respiratory health, and the ability to let go of what no longer serves us. Supporting these systems through acupuncture and seasonal self-care can help strengthen your body’s defenses and prepare for the colder months ahead.

The Lung System: Your First Line of Defense

In TCM, the Lungs are responsible for wei qi—your body’s protective energy. Think of it as your first barrier against colds, viruses, and seasonal allergies. When the Lung system is strong, your immune system is better equipped to fight off illness.

Signs your Lung system may need support include:

  • Frequent colds or lingering cough

  • Shortness of breath or shallow breathing

  • Seasonal allergies or sinus issues

  • Dry skin

Acupuncture for the lungs and immunity works by regulating qi flow, strengthening respiratory function, and calming inflammation in the respiratory tract.

The Large Intestine: Letting Go for Better Immunity

Autumn also corresponds to the Large Intestine, the organ of release. Just as trees shed their leaves, our bodies benefit from letting go of waste, toxins, and even emotional patterns that no longer serve us.

When the Large Intestine is out of balance, you may notice:

  • Constipation or irregular bowel movements

  • Skin breakouts

  • A sense of being “stuck” physically or emotionally

Supporting this system through acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and mindful lifestyle practices helps restore clarity and ease—both physically and mentally.

Seasonal Tips for a Stronger Immune System

In addition to acupuncture, these simple TCM-inspired tips can help you stay healthy this fall:

  • Eat warm, nourishing foods: Soups, roasted root vegetables, and seasonal produce like squash, apples, and pears are ideal.

  • Stay hydrated: Cooler air can dry the lungs and skin. Herbal teas and broths add warmth and moisture.

  • Breathe deeply: Practice slow, mindful breathing outdoors, especially in crisp morning air, to strengthen your lungs.

  • Create routine: Autumn is a season of structure—consistent sleep and daily rituals can help ground your energy.

How Acupuncture Supports Immunity in Fall

Acupuncture strengthens your body’s natural defenses, reduces stress (a major factor in immune weakness), and restores balance across systems. Patients often find they get sick less often and recover more quickly when they include seasonal acupuncture as part of their wellness routine.

Steamed Pears with Ginger & Honey

A soothing recipe to support your lungs this fall

Ingredients (serves 2):

  • 2 ripe but firm pears (Asian or Bartlett work well)

  • 1–2 thin slices of fresh ginger

  • 1–2 tsp raw honey (optional, add after cooking)

  • A squeeze of lemon juice (optional, for brightness)

Instructions:

  1. Wash pears and slice the tops off. Carefully core them, leaving the bottom intact to form a “cup.”

  2. Place 1 slice of ginger inside each pear.

  3. Set the pears upright in a heat-proof bowl and place in a steamer basket over boiling water.

  4. Cover and steam for 15–20 minutes, until the pears are tender.

  5. Remove from heat, drizzle with honey, and add a touch of lemon juice if desired.

Why it’s good for you:
In Chinese medicine, pears are known to moisten dryness, nourish the lungs, and ease cough or sore throat. Ginger adds gentle warmth to support digestion and immunity, while honey soothes the throat.

“The only way to optimal health is to care for ourselves emotionally, physically, and mentally every day.”
